1 oz Maple Leaf 2008 Fine gold 9999
The Maple Leaf gold coin is a Canadian bullion coin. Its name comes from the English term for the characteristic sugar maple leaf on the reverse side of the coin, which is also a central element of the Canadian flag.
Since 2013, the 1-oz version has featured an additional optical security feature applied by laser. Next to the stem of the maple leaf, a second, much smaller maple leaf is engraved. Inside this leaf, the last two digits of the year of issue are visible. The inscriptions on the coin are in both English and French due to Canada’s bilingualism.
The production of Maple Leaf gold coins began in 1979 at the Royal Canadian Mint. One factor that played a major role in the popularity of the Maple Leaf coins was the issue of apartheid in South Africa, which caused significant controversy. At that time, many countries decided to stop buying Krugerrand gold coins. Instead, the Canadians wanted to introduce an alternative to the market, and thus the Maple Leaf gold coin was created as the world’s second modern bullion coin.
